All about the A Wild Lankan Ride.

There is a seductive, melancholy beauty about Sri Lanka that you may  not find anywhere else in the world. It is today a nation that is fast recovering from years of civil war – ever more reason to quickly pack your bags. Sri Lanka is referred as the “resplendent land” – in the ancient Indian epic Ramayana. The island has numerous other references that testify to its natural beauty and wealth. Islamic folklore maintains that Adam and Eve were offered refuge on the island as solace for their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Buddhism, existed in Sri Lanka during its period of extended glory and is still an integral part of the Sinhala culture. Asian poets have lauded Sri Lanka as a beauty, calling it the “pearl upon the brow of India.”

  1. Day 1 Kithulgala

A short transfer from Negembo / Colombo will take you to the outskirts to start cycling.  The transfer is necessary to get rid of the highways, cities and traffic. Your day starts at the foothills of the mountainous central highlands region that we will be cycling through for the next three days. We stop for lunch at Ruwanwella and get set for the final 30km of a gentle uphill all the way to our accommodation on the banks of the Kelani River, where a cold beer awaits us. Although Kithulgala was the site for the filming of David Lean’s masterpiece “Bridge on the River Kwai”, it certainly isn’t a major tourist attraction. Over the next few days your meals will all be local delicacies including fruits, curries, fruits, rice and sambol.

  2. Day 2 Nuwar Eliya

This is one of the toughest days as we make our way into the heart of the central highlands. There is a 90min transfer to Kotagala through the Ginigathena Pass, avoiding 30kms of main roads. At Kotagala we start our days challenge which should bring us by mid morning to the planters’ bungalow on the Thalawakelle Tea Estate where we stop for a cup of the finest Ceylon Tea, overlooking the magnificent Devon waterfall. From here our route heads north off the main road through Watagoda rising on an incredible tea estate road cut into the escarpment on 18km of the toughest section of our Sri Lankan challenge. Nothing quite prepares you for this section and many of us may end up walking to the top. We end the day with a relaxing downhill to our hotel in Nuwara Eliya.

  3. Day 3 Kandy

We leave Nuwara Eliya for our longest day through the pretty highland town. We soon start on a 15km downhill that will take us to the Bluefield Tea Estate, where we have a quick visit before continuing on our way. Another 40kms of great downhill to takes us to Delpitiya where we start on almost deserted roads for the next 50km with the most spectacular views. Lunch is close to the village of Pupuressa with its wonderful waterfalls and in the afternoon we make our way through Gallaha and all the way to Kandy. We enter alongside its beautiful University and continue on to our Hotel in this lovely and relaxed city.
